This writing lesson is about how I wrote 'A Rose in the Ashes.' The lesson will talk about the use of descriptive phrases and strong verbs in writing, how to write with a purpose that will enhance your writing, and demonstrate how effective writing can bring life and compelling emotions to your work.
The Reasons Behind A Rose in the Ashes
‘A Rose in the Ashes’ is both a personal story and a writing lesson. I used a part of my life to illustrate a few aspects of writing.
Before I write, I determine the purpose for the piece that I am composing. If my goal is to amuse, I steer my words and sentences in the direction of humor. If I want to inform or instruct, my writing will parse out pearls of wisdom and instruction. If my intention is to make an emotional impact, I use the power of words to wrest the desired emotions straight from my readers’ minds and hearts.
I wanted ‘A Rose in the Ashes’ to express my own personal feelings while tapping into my readers’ emotions at the same time. I wanted the viewer of this piece to identify with me and realize that they are not alone…there are others who are experiencing the thrills and tears of life, too.
I wanted to illustrate how the use of contrasting elements and paradoxes can add power and strength to words. This sentence, for instance: "The sound of silence grew loud in my ears, and in its stillness, I could hear the echo of quiet tears," is filled with words of contrast. Silence, by its definition, is the absence of sound or noise. Stillness is uttering no sound, and yet I use words like these to add tension and emotional depth to my story.
I wanted my story to appear to be about a dying dream and a daydream at the same time, thus, the final sentence. I wanted it to be both reflections of an experience and a life lesson, too.
As I do with all of my writing, I wanted to show how the use of descriptive words and strong verbs give life to objects and sensation to unfeeling things.
And, finally, I wanted to make my words dance, so that as they are read, their various rhythms would be felt. (You can read one of my previous article written about the rhythm of writing here.)
With time, practice, occasional curses, and a few bars of chocolate, you, too, can bring life to all of your writings.
Determine your purpose.
Stay true to your goals.
Then create.
