Inspiration for Beginning Writers

How'd You Do That? ~ Putting Your Words Together

Do you ever wonder how I come up with my continuous flow of words? You do? Then, you're in luck. This article will tell you just that; how I write what I write when I write it and how you can do it, too.

My writing mostly comes from inspiration. Where does my inspiration come from? Everything. For instance, my article for "Lynette's Lynes" was inspired by a passing thought as I breathed in noxious fumes from Absorbine, Jr., courtesy of a body massage given by yours truly to a truly grateful husband. Every thirty seconds, I would shout, "Be right back!" and tear into the living room to fling my words onto my word processor before they were forgotten. I am inspired because I keep my mind open to the possibilities of everything.

What comes after inspiration, you'd like to know? Well, I imagine my intended audience (that's you), think about what I want to say and the reaction(s) I would like to evoke, then put those thoughts into a written story that I tell with emotion and enthusiasm. The emotions differ depending upon the message, but the enthusiasm is always present. I insert part of myself into every line and embrace my victims....er, readers throughout my paragraphs. Where connections are made, inspiration flourishes.

Always, the rules of grammar nudge me; they keep me in line, although I sometimes step over that line because I know wherein I tread. You have to know the rules in order to bend them with your words.

Humor. I love the use of humor. A good sense of humor enables me to teach and not lecture. Laughter encourages the forgiveness of mistakes; with it, I can gently admonish without breaking the spirit wherever necessity dictates.

The most important component of my writing, however, is order. Without order, chaos reigns and confusion is the order of the day. Every story has a beginning, middle, and an ending. (I would use the word "climax" instead of "ending," but I have read many things that did not have that final push through of emotion...that left me feeling flat and unfulfilled.) Every good story has a purpose. I know why I am writing every sentence before it hits the page so that my readers can follow where my words lead. Where am I going, you ask? Why, I'm heading for the climax, of course.

Writing is a joy. A joy and a job. It's not always easy; it is often more than hard. But, if my writing encourages, if the words I express inspire, then my work is complete. I am complete.

What else would you like to know?
