Comparisons
One of the most dangerous pits that we as writers often fall into is that of comparing ourselves to each other. Admiring the talent and writing style of others is fine and can be beneficial, but when comparisons are made, trouble can only follow. "I wish that I could write like _____" or "I'll never be able to write like that!" is a common thought generated in the minds of writers everywhere.
Applying the philosophy that imitation is the highest form of flattery might rule the day in the kingdom of marketing, but for writers, that reign can only end in mental terror. Subjecting our thoughts to mental discipline with the knowledge that our talents and styles are as meaningful and important as those of the writers or authors that we admire, puts us back into the seat of power.
We are all kings and queens of our own writing castles. Some are gothic and some are medieval. Some have sentinels and in others reside the lord of the manor and his country squires. All are fortresses, however, no matter the style, the shape, or the materials used to construct them. When one of the most dangerous enemies to creativity-that of comparison- tries to storm the gates, pull up the drawbridge. Shoot down the arrows of confidence in your abilities and that particular villain can be vanquished in the battle of the mind.
You reign supreme...
